AI & Hosting in the EU for Web Projects

Why Location Matters

As soon as a web application processes personal data or uses an AI feature, the question arises where that data lives and which services are involved. Clarifying this early avoids costly rework later. If you want to run your web projects in the EU on purpose, I implement the technical solution for it.

What I Implement

  • Servers and AI Endpoints in the EU: I set up hosting and the connection to AI services so that the systems involved are located in the EU.
  • Model Choice: Together we pick an AI model that fits the task and the location requirement.
  • Encryption: I store saved files in encrypted form.
  • Review of Third-Party Services: I check which external services are integrated and which data flows to them.

Operations after launch are part of this, see Hosting & Maintenance.

Practical Example

For the portal pdf-in-zugferd.de, the server and the AI endpoint run at IONOS in Germany. Stored invoice files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and data is kept separate per tenant. It is my own product, and I was responsible for its development. How such an application is built is described under AI Web Applications.

Limits

I do not want to raise false expectations:

  • An EU location does not automatically make a project GDPR-compliant. Data processing agreements, legal basis, cookies and third-party services still need to be checked.
  • I assess US providers with an EU region separately, because location alone does not answer every question.
  • I do not give legal advice. For binding statements I recommend a legal review by a qualified professional.

Discuss Your Web Application

Are you planning a web application with an AI feature or want to host an existing project differently? Briefly describe your plan and we will clarify together what makes technical sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my project automatically GDPR-compliant with EU hosting?

No. A server in the EU is a good foundation but does not replace a review. Data processing agreements, the legal basis, cookies and integrated third-party services must be looked at separately. I implement the technology and point out open items; this is not legal advice.

Which AI models are available in the EU?

Some providers run AI models in EU data centres, and some models can be deployed on your own EU servers. The offering changes quickly, so I check the current state before a decision. For my own portal, the AI endpoint runs at IONOS in Germany.

Can I move an existing project?

Often yes. I first look at where your project runs today, which third-party services are integrated and what data arises. Then I propose a move with as little interruption as possible, or explain why a move is not worthwhile.

Does this cost extra?

That cannot be answered in general. It depends on the provider, the scope and whether a project is new or moving. After a short conversation about your plan, you receive a concrete estimate.
